How about a background?

If you are anything like me you prefer to make everything on your cards, I never use background papers and very rarely any store bought embellishment. Nothing wrong with those, I just usually prefer to make it all from scratch using stamps, inks and paper. (see further down, not always true, ha!)

So using stencils to make my own background is right up my alley but this time I decided to try it on black paper for a different look.

I started by selecting a few Altenew stencils and some black card stock, I taped the card to the stencil from the back and then the whole thing down to my craft mat. Then I sponged white Hero Arts pigment ink through the stencil. The result was quite striking!

On some of these I also tried sponging Altenew crisp inks, it sort of worked on top of the white pigment ink but was almost invisible on the black card stock, looks interesting in the picture but is even more subtle in real life. To at least use up the ink on the stencil I spritzed it with water and used the stencil as a stamp on to white card stock, it almost looks like a positive/negative, don't you think?

Then I pulled the backgrounds into cards, I felt that the black ones needed color so I used some of my favorite sets to stamp out some images from Baby Zoo and Faithful Feather and made some cards.

On this one I actually used a trinket that I had in a drawer, I felt it needed a bit of gold at the top and couldn't find any gold thread. I think this works.

For my last card I used the background I stamped out from the leftover ink on the stencil.
First I planned my layout, this is handy and helps before you commit to stamping or glueing something down. I stamped the lovely bouquet from Celebrations set and watercolored using Altenew crisp inks, works really well.

Here is my final card for today, very different from the two above, I think I prefer this one, how about you? Would love if you left a comment!

This post completes class number seven in the AECP - these cards were inspired by a fun class at Altenew Academy by Laurel Beard - Celebrations, stencil techniques.
